Employment Protection Deregulation and Labor Shares in Advanced Economies

Abstract This paper assesses the impact of job protection deregulation on labor share in a sample 26 advanced economies during 1970–2013 period, using newly constructed dataset major reforms this area. We employ difference-in-differences identification strategy two identifying assumptions grounded theory—deregulation has larger effects industries characterized by (i) higher “natural” propensity to regularly adjust workforce and (ii) lower elasticity substitution between capital labor. find significant negative share, contributing about tenth its observed decline economies.
